Mini Games

Chess minigames are fun, short games with fewer pieces and simple rules. They are great for learning and improving your skills without playing a full game. Most minigames don’t even include kings, so the way to win is very different from normal chess.

The pieces move just like in regular chess, but many special rules like promotion, en passant, and stalemate are not used.

In regular chess, you win by checkmate. But in minigames, you might win by reaching the other side of the board or by capturing all your opponent’s pieces.

We’ve built a special engine to play these games on the Little Chess Champs site. Try them out and feel free to share your own ideas – we might add your minigame too! Don’t forget to try playing from both sides.

Types of Minigames

Pawn War

White starts. You win by either:

  • Getting a pawn to the other side,
  • Capturing all opponent's pawns, or
  • Leaving your opponent with no legal moves.
  • Pawns move forward and capture diagonally.
King and Pawn War

White starts. You win by:

  • Getting a pawn or king to the other side, or
  • Capturing the opponent’s king.
  • Remember: The king is strong in endgames and can move one square in any direction.

Queen vs 8 Pawns

  • The pawns win by reaching the other side safely or capturing the queen.
  • The queen wins by capturing all the pawns.
Rook vs 5 Pawns

  • The pawns win by reaching the end safely or capturing the rook.
  • The rook wins by capturing all the pawns.

Bishop vs 3 Pawns

  • The pawns win by reaching the end safely or capturing the bishop.
  • The bishop wins by capturing all the pawns.
2 Knights vs 3 Pawns

  • The pawns go first.
  • Pawns win by reaching the other side safely or capturing the knights.
  • The knights win by capturing all the pawns.

Queen vs Knight

  • The knight goes first.
  • The goal is simple: capture your opponent’s piece.
It may seem like the queen has the advantage, but this game is fun and helps you learn.
King Hunt

  • White has a full setup; Black has only a king on e8.
  • White tries to checkmate.
  • Black tries to cause a stalemate.
